Television

Recommended TV shows

We don't watch a lot of television because, in our opinion, most of commercial television isn't worth watching. However, there are a few shows that we think are done well enough to be worth of our precious free time. If you know of any more, please let us know!

West Wing

Last year, we didn't miss a single episode. Of course, watching it every week with our good friends Justin and Kata Sybenga, were added incentive, but even without them, I think we will still be faithful viewers (Justin and Kata moved to Washington, DC this past fall). It's taught us a lot about politics (even if it is a quasi-reality version of politics - is there anyone at Capitol Hill as good looking as Sam?!), it's awed us with its ability to tackle serious issues and themes, and it's taken us along for the ride.

Six Feet Under

Because we don't want to pay for cable TV, we don't get to watch this show very often. In fact, it was only in a hotel room in Siem Riep, Cambodia this past fall that we watched our first few episodes. But - we really enjoyed them and were delighted with the combinations of humour, creativity, seriousness, and quality character development.

The Sopranos

This is another HBO show that has been widely acclaimed by TV critics. We rented the first three episodes from Blockbuster this past January so that we could see what all the fuss was about. Our response after watching them was WOW. WOW in that it's amazing the potential that TV has to create complex characters and story lines (potential that never gets reached by the typical hour drama fare on commercial TV), but also WOW for all the violence, nudity, and profanity that the show uses. We're still trying to figure out which WOW outweighs the other...

Law and Order

This show is also quality TV except for the new female lawyer lead, she's not as good as the old one.
