Our Batty Adventure

Heather and Charles Van Hoffen were our guests from August 18-19. We had a good time with then at the Beach and in Saugatuck.

The highlight was an interesting experience on Saturday night at about 3:30 AM. Deb and I were in bed and we heard some noise in the hallway. It was heather and Charles in the bathroom doing a combination of laughing and screaming. They said there was a bat in the living room where they had been sleeping. They hid under the covers for a half hour or so then made a run for the bathroom.

We huddled in our bedroom for a while and peaked out now and then to see this dark creature looping around our living room. We got some weapons together (brooms and blankets) and made a plan. We finally decided that we had to get it out the door and outside. First we went to open the door and then went to the living room equipped with our weapons and … the bat was gone.

This was almost more upsetting than when we could see it. We hunted around and Jon found it on the vertical blinds hanging upside down. It really did look like a creature of the devil. Well, Jon hit it with a broom and it started its circling of the room again. Whenever it can close we would swat at it with or weapons and Jon made a pathetic attempt to throw the blanket at it. It circled lower and lower to the ground and finally moved to the dining area, and then it was gone. We were not sure where it went but finally decided that the bat had been vanquished down the stairs and outside. We had won.

We took this picture after the battle.
