We have added some pictures from our time at The Open Door and some faces of a few of the community's friends.

The Open Door's paraphrased version of The Lord's Prayer

In her book Making Room - Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition, Christine Pohl revisits the discipline of welcoming strangers and provides the foundation for renewed commitment to recovering hospitality as a Christian tradition. In her discussion, she studies eight intentional Christian communities involved in substantial amounts of hospitality. The Open Door Community in Atlanta, Georgia was one of the them.

After reading this book, we wanted to become involved in such communities and so, we contacted The Open Door about the possibility of us becoming three month resident volunteers. They sent us applications and more information about their organization, soon we were hooked!

Founded in 1981, the Open Door is a "residential christian community of 30 men and women who minister to homeless people in the city of Atlanta and prisoners in the state of Georgia." Members of Open Door share "work, study, worship and recreation." Together they prepare "thousands of meals each month" with the help from a host of volunteers and offer "comfort and sanctuary" to homeless people by providing showers, changes of clothing, and a safe place to rest. For the members of the Open Door community "it is not enough simply to treat the symptoms of poverty. They are called to speak out against the conditions that help to create a population of homeless and imprisoned people."
