YOA [our Year Of Adventure]

Driving West

June 2002

We didn't think it was possible, but somehow we managed to pack up all of our earthly belongings and store them at a number of our friends' houses. We also managed to pack our Jetta with the rest of our belongings that we would need for: hiking, biking, car camping, volunteering at the Open Door, living in CA for a month. Was it a lot of stuff? Let's just say that we could do a commercial for VW if they wanted to try to sell the Jetta based on its storage space (if we were into that whole advertising thing!).

Because Jon hadn't been to any of the Western Canadian provinces, Deb was quite excited to show off her beloved country. And, after driving through Illinois, Wisconsin and the Dakotas, we entered heaven (oops, did I write that?) and into Winnipeg, Manitoba. The cramped car experience was reminiscent for Deb of the family trip she took with her five siblings and parents in 1989 (when she was at the mature age of 14), but this time she got to sit in the front seat and decide when and where to make the pit stops. From Winnipeg, we drove to as many Canadian National Parks as we could - Prince Albert, Riding Mountain, Bird's View, driving our way through Saskatchewan and Alberta. In Edmonton we stayed with family friends (the Sneeps) and met up with Sarah and Aron Zuidhof.
