YOA [our Year Of Adventure]

Cambodia

After four months of biking, we were ready to be in one place for awhile. We stayed in Phnom Penh and taught English and computer classes to the Cambodian staff members at the CRWRC office. Of course we also found time to explore and do the tourist things.

Being here was difficult, perhaps more difficult than in any other country. Whereas we could bike by the poverty and injustices we saw in the other countries, here, we saw them in more depth and talked to people who suffered from them first hand. Cambodia's tragic past still affects its present conditions - that was hard to see too. But, there's hope and things are changing. It was good to help out in the small way that we did and see that many others are indeed making a difference there, and that the people there are very eager to learn and work hard on correcting some of the injustices there.

We ended our trip by visiting the Angkor ruins, a highlight of our entire trip. Words can't do these ruins justice (we read about them before going and the written descriptions didn't prepare us for the awe, mystery and beauty of these magnificent ruins).
